Here is an easy way to bring something new to the table. Try this traditional Greek spin on a classic burger.

Ingredients

  • Tzaziki Sauce:
  • 8 oz sour cream
  • 1 cup diced English cucumber (peel on)
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • Gyros Burger:
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 tsp Greek seasoning
  • cooking spray
  • 4 pita rounds
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 large tomato slices
  • 4 thin red onion slices
  • Optional for serving: Greek olives, pickles and feta cheese

Method

Tzaziki Sauce: Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Gyros Burgers: Combine ground beef and Greek seasoning. Form 4 patties. Cook in large skillet, broil or grill to desired doneness. Spray another large skillet with cooking spray and warm pita bread rounds over medium heat until lightly browned on each side or broil or grill briefly. Continue with rest of pita breads, spraying skillet in between as needed. To assemble, cut 1" off top of pita bread. Line each with 1 lettuce leaf, 1 tomato slice and 1 onion slice. Place 1 Gyros burger inside each and drizzle generously with Tzaziki Sauce. Serve with extra sauce, a few Greek olives and pickles (and maybe a little Feta cheese).

Notes: This recipe doubles easily for larger groups. While serving in the U.S. Navy in Greece for several years, my husband developed a love for Greek food. These simple burgers are always a hit at our house. Substitute reduced fat sour cream for a lower fat version. Still creamy and delicious.
