Homemade Corndogs

Homemade corndogs are great for any summer evening. This main dish recipe is easy and tasty.
 

Ingredients

  • 1/2 C yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 C flour
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 t dry mustard
  • 1 t baking powder
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1/2 C milk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 T melted shortening
  • 6 hot dogs
  • 6 skewers
  • vegetable oil for frying

Method

Combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, mustard, baking powder and salt. Add the milk, egg and shortening and mix until very smooth. Pour the mixture into a tall glass or jar. Wipe the hotdogs with paper towel to make sure they are dry. Place the skewers into the hot dogs and dip them into the cornmeal batter, coating evenly. Deep fry in oil heated to 375 until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Drain on paper towels and serve with mustard and ketchup.
