Homestyle Meatballs with Hearty Gravy

Try these old-fashioned meatballs and gravy. The gravy uses cream of mushroom soup as the base with milk and brown gravy mix added.

Ingredients:

  • Meatballs:
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups fine bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)  1/2 teaspoon dried herb mix (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons vegetable oil    Hearty Gravy:
  • 1-2 tablespoons butter or margarine  1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 package brown gravy mix
  • 1 cup milk
  • Hot wide egg-noodles or rice.

Method

Meatballs: Mix all ingredients except vegetable oil well in large bowl. The mixture should be very dense and not too sticky. Add additional breadcrumbs if needed to reach desired consistency. Roll into 1" to 1 1/2" balls. Heat vegetable oil in large frying pan on medium-high. Cook meatballs until well-browned all the way around. Keep warm until served. Hearty Gravy: While meatballs are cooking, saute chopped onions and butter or margarine in small saucepan on medium-high heat. Remove from heat and add soup, milk, and brown gravy mix. Return to heat and mix well with whisk until simmering. Simmer 5 to 10 minutes to thicken. Serve meatballs over hot wide egg noodles or rice and top with gravy.

Notes: Onions may be omitted from gravy if desired.
